Student exchange application
In order for us to accept your nomination, we must receive the following:
- Completed International Student Exchange Application
- TOEFL score report
- Official transcript from your university
- Original bank statements indicating the amount of liquid funds available
- Letter of interest
- Letter of recommendation
- Photocopy of the passport biography page
- A completed Immigration Form for DS-2019 Issuance
- Payment confirmation of non-refundable $30 VCU immigration fee
All exchange students must enroll as full-time students in order to maintain legal status while in the U.S. If you are admitted as an undergraduate exchange student you need to enroll in a total of 12 credits each semester (typically four classes worth 3 credits each for a total of 12 credits). If you are admitted as a graduate student you should be enrolled in at least 9 credits. Most (but not all) classes are worth 3 credits each.
Please consult with your academic advisers at your home university to determine which classes at VCU will be appropriate for your degree program. VCU’s course descriptions provides details regarding the content of all courses offered at VCU, and the schedule of classes lists the classes offered for a specific term. You need to look at both sections in order to make your selections.
Please make a list of classes you would like to take and include this with your application. We recommend you try to select at least two alternate classes in addition to your first four choices. Organize your list in order of priority. Classes on your list must include the five-digit Course Reference Number (CRN), department code, and course number as well as the course title. For example, 13489 INTL 101 Human Societies and Globalization. Please be sure to clearly indicate your class request on your exchange application. We cannot process your request without all of this information.
Note that course numbers indicate the level of the class. Courses numbered 100-299 are lower division (first and second year) undergraduate classes; 300-499 are upper division (third and fourth year) undergraduate classes; and courses numbered 500 and above are graduate level classes.
Once we have processed your application, we will begin registering you for the classes you have indicated on your application. If a class is unavailable, we may choose to register you for another section of the class at a different time, or we may choose an alternate course with similar course content. Any changes you would like to make to your schedule can be done during the first week of classes before the add/drop deadline.
Note: Amber Hill, Ph.D, the Director of Academic Programs, will register you for classes. The School of the Arts handles all registration for VCUQ students. Please remember that you can always make changes to your schedule during the first week of classes and the earlier we receive your application for exchange, the more likely we will be able to register you for your desired classes.
