Mission

Student outside readingThe English Language Program consists of qualified and dedicated instructors who teach a variety of ESL courses within a safe and caring envronment. ELP features a pro-active approach toward technology enhanced instruction and constructive curricula for students who are academically admissable to VCU and who require greater fluency in English. Specialized short-term programs are offered throughout the year for individuals and groups who want to improve English skills for professional or personal reasons.

The English Language Program will be the leading IEP in the mid-Atlantic region by providing every ESL student with first-rate teaching, learning and advising.

The VCU English Language Program in the Global Education Office offers numerous advantages for speakers at all levels including the following:

  • All courses are taught by ESL professionals, all of whom possess a Master's degree in ESL or a related field and have either worked, lived and/or studied in other countries
  • We accept conditional admission without an iBT or IELTS score
  • Average class size of 12 students
  • Three levels of instruction: Beginner (Level 1), Intermediate (Level 2), and Advanced (Level 3)
  • New ELP Computer Lab featuring the latest software
  • New ELP Tutoring Center in which ELP faculty help students improve their skills on an individual basis
  • ELP students may enroll in VCU courses depending on fluency
  • Short-term programs designed specifically for the needs of your students and/or career professionals
  • Curriculum which features academic preparation courses based on future studies and/or career choices
  • Carnegie Speech instruction to help students improve pronunciation skills
  • Field trips and other activities for students to apply language skills learned in the classroom to local and United States culture

Affiliations

The VCU English Language Program is a member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), an organization of nearly 300 intensive English language programs and associated service providers in the U.S., and the Colonial Academic Alliance.
