Programs
The VCU English Language Program regularly offers three study options for students who wish to study English as a second language at the university: the Graduate Preparatory Program, the Academic Preparatory Program and the English Enrichment Program. Graduate and undergraduate students who are conditionally admitted to the university should enroll in the appropriate track in order to satisfy the university’s English proficiency requirement. The English Enrichment Program is for students who wish to improve their English for personal or professional reasons and do not plan to apply for an academic program at VCU.
The ELP also offers specialized programs designed for students with specific language goals, including English and more, Four-week Culture and Conversation Program (Integrated Skills), and special summer enrichment programs. Students with specific questions about these programs should contact the ELP office directly for more information.
The ELP offers 10 levels of instruction for core classes from beginning (foundations) to advanced. This is except for pronunciation classes, which are offered at four levels of instruction. Students can finish a level in one session or in one semester, depending on whether they are enrolled in a short-session course or in a semester-length course.
Core classes are offered in writing and grammar, reading and vocabulary, listening, speaking, and pronunciation. There are also electives in the course curriculum, which are rotated each session.
