Virginia Commonwealth University’s International Partnership with Hadassah University Medical Center/Hebrew University and the Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine began in July 2008 when the two universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The memorandum was signed during a two-day visit by a delegation from VCU including Dr. Sheldon Retchin, Vice President for Health Sciences, John Duval, CEO of MCV Hospitals, Peter Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., former executive director, Global Education Office, Dr. Jerome Strauss, dean of the School of Medicine, and Sarah Spiegel, Ph.D., chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Hadassah and the Hebrew University Faculty of Medicine is a world-class university medical institution in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel that has achieved a global reputation for excellence in caring and curing, and education and research in the Middle East. Spiegel, partnership director, is working with faculty and administration at both institutions to develop further research collaborations.

Hadassah is comprised of two campuses, one on Mt. Scopus (founded in 1961) and one in Ein Kerem (founded in 1939), with a combined 5,000 health care professionals (800 physicians, 2,200 nurses, 500 paramedicals and 1,500 support staff).
