J-1 exchange visitors

Group sitting in classroomThe J-1 exchange visitor program began as a Department of State special program for the purpose of promoting academic, cultural and scientific exchange between the visitor and the host country with minimal paperwork and inconvenience to the international guest.

After moving to the U.S. Information Agency and back to the Department of State, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs now handles the exchange visitor program. Since the U.S. and foreign governments have a shared interest in the exchange visitor aliens returning home at the end of their programs, the J-1 may only be used for temporary activities and not as a bridge to permanent resident status.
